, isn't it? >> yeah, bill, still got more questions than answers at this point and today the ntsb fang out around the country and the globe trying to get more answers. in tucson, arizona, ntsb along with members of boeing were down at a company called secure a plane. owned by its corporate plane out of london. they make chaernlgs for the lithium batteries down there doing some tests. the ntsb with boeing investigators out in everett, washington, where they make the dreamliner. they have hundreds of employees at boeing in everett working on the 878 problem, and they are in teams trying to do what you would want to do here, do a test. try to figure out if there's some common theme here. and finally in japan, japanese investigators, along with investigators from the ntsb, they are looking at the battery from the ana dreamliner, the ntsb said that battery was ore charged, different than what was said about boston taking a look at boeing since the incident on boston on january 7th. still more questions than dreamliners. >> you know the ceo of the company has to be saying what's next? >> so
further. i have had people saying what are they doing at boeing? are they working with the ntsb? a lot of it is centered around the everett factory, where the dreamliner is built they are out there doing tests, working in teams. i'm told it's hundreds of employees working on this 787 problem. they're not in one central location, but spread out throughout the boeing facility. boeing is tapping a number of areas for expertise. as for the ceo, he is involved frequently in the updates going on within the company. he's taking part in daily meetings on the latest findings. this is the biggest test of his ten year and ceo of boeing. what are we seeing in terms of the investigations involving government agencies? investigators are talking with suppliers, some in japan, some in arizona and england. there are suppliers around the world. the jtsb and ntsb are pursuing two different theories. as you look at shares of boeing which are under pressure, the jtsb says the ana plane did receive an overcharge, the battery. the ntsb in boston says, no, that didn't happen. there was not an overcharge invol

of the secure a plane. we are told by the ntsb, they will be doing tests on the battery chargeert and apu controller, the engine near the back of the plane that power its when the engines are off. it was a lithium ion battery that turns on that engine that overheated and caught fire on the 787 at boston's logan airport. investigators said the battery had not been overcharged. but something led to it overheating. the japanese transportation officials are kuking their own investigation, focusing on the company that makes the batteries. a boeing source tells me the two batteries that overheat head serial numbers close together, but it appears unlikely that they were part of a bad batch. the planes were assembled a year apart. the boeing ceo sent employees a letter to employees saying he had complete confidence in the plane and the company would do everything possible to fix the electrical problems quickly and get the plane back in the air. they are confident this won't last long. boeing won't deliver any more 787s until the grounding is lifted and a norwegian air shuttle has been told to exp

the ntsb is now starting to look at exactly the air worthiness issues, what was behind it, they've got investigation teams that are on their way to boston. and they're going to be asking the tough questions, wolf. they're going to want to know why brand-new aircraft, seemingly have recurring problems, albeit, of a different nature. are these the little glitches that boeing says they are, that happen with all new major complicated planes, or is there something else that's happening? there are lots of rumors, wolf, about whether the wiring has been done properly, whether this has been done properly or the other. so that's the issue at the moment. >> i assume, richard, there's been a backlash already, from the airlines that have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to purchase these dreamliners from boeing? >> yes. and the serious part about that is the airlines are used to glitches. so it's not like you or me, the airlines expect a certain amount of headache, toothache, pain and misery with a new plane, a new model. but they don't expect it to be of this level. aog is the phrase they us
in the news, a lot of people saying are there others out there. the ntsb yesterday gave an update in terms of where the investigation stands, including showing the media what's going on in the ntsb lab, seeing the charred batteries from the 787 dreamliner that was the one that had to be put out in boston. well, now they still say they do not know the exact cause of the batteries catching fire. as for those batteries and one other component, the charger, the charger for the batteries built by a company called secureaplane, a plant out in tucson, arizona. back in 2006, there was a fire involving lithium ion batteries for the 787 at the secureaplane plant. a worker there warned the company about the batteries and the chargers and the possibility of fires. >> these lithium ion batteries, too much heat and they'll explode. it will be a nightmare. >> michael leon was dismissed from the company for repeated problems on the job. secureaplane told me yesterday the battery charger for the dreamliner was successfully tested. there was a fire in the facility in 2006 during one test. however, the curre

of tucson today conduct a test on the battery chargers. over the weekend, the ntsb released a statement saying the battery had not been overcharged. when you look at the picture of it, you can tell clearly that it was overheated. investigators will be there doing a number of tests to see if it was working properly. remember, in our boston fire, it was the backup battery that overheated and started a fire. the battery that overheated was near the front of the plane on a japanese flight. dagen: dan, it also seems that japanese and u.s. authorities have a different task when it comes to investigating these problems. they are going in different direction so they can cover all of the bases. they were made in japan by a company. a boeing source tells me the serial numbers of the two batteries that overheated are close together. that initial thought was it was a bad batch of batteries. that would be a good thing. that now appears less likely. investigators have not found any anonymously's. the investigation is focusing on the entire electrical system and how those lithium batteries factor in.
in what we understand. the ntsb and boeing, a technical team from boeing, they're investigating the fire on the dreamliner. it was found in a compartment with batteries, and electrical components. it's not entirely clear at this point exactly what caused the fire. it is believed that it might have been caused by one of the lithium batteries on the dreamliner. that is an issue, because the dreamliner uses lithium im batteries to power onboard electronics. way back in 2007 the faa issued special rules for the use of lithium im batteries because of the concern of flammability risk involving those batteries. this is the fourth dreamliner incident involving its electronics, or losing power, since december 4th. look at this timeline. back on november 4th, united took its first domestic 787 flight, at the time there had been no reports. a month later, a united flight going to niewark to houston, experienced mechanical problems, reporting a loss of power. cutter airways a few days later had to ground one of its 787 jets for what it said was a faulty generator. the 14th of december, united ground
in the united states, the ntsb continues to look at the japan airline 787 battery, but in reverse of what we're seeing in japan, they say this battery was not overcharged. the investigators are in arizona today visiting the battery charger manufacturer. that is a company called secure a plane. it's a subsidiary of mega plc out of the uk. over the last couple of days, that's seen a little bit of pressure as well. what we're seeing is an investigation where they haven't been able to square up what happened in japan with what happened in boston, so as a result, they're going to start diving further into the components that go into the dreamliner, and are connected and work with the battery to see if they can find out exactly what went wrong. and then from there, they might have a better sense of how to correct the situation. guys, back to you. >> now, phil, because these two regulatory agencies on opposite sides of the ocean are seeing different things in their investigation. does that tell you that the investigation may be much longer than anticipated? >> well, yeah, it would be different if o

the faa. we're waiting to see the results of the ntsb investigation to make a decision about what it all means. so frankly, we're saying to investors is, look, we can't say with any conviction level that there's a certain entry point where we want to jump in here and buy. what we want is more data. if you own boeing shares here, i think you hang on. i think the long-term outcome of this is that they will sort through the problems. you can see airbus this morning expressing confidence that they think boeing, their competitor will sort through the problems. but right now, you know, you're dealing with emotion and you're dealing with news flow, which is very hard for investors to forecast. >> there but for the grace of god for airbus. they're not going to crash airbus. >> look the safety of all things for airplane manufacturers, the one thing they can all agree within, the one thing they share data on, the one thing they're all committed to is safety. >> if it leaks out of the battery and has a weird smell, it's not a fire. >> yeah, that's really the important thing about what happened yest
said, the fire at logan is a unique example and the ntsb is investigating but i think trying to connect this event to other events is pure speculation at this point. we don't have a lot of data. >> have you seen any sign that production might be interrupted, slowed down if, in fact, they have to address the things along the production line? >> none whatsoever. >> because as the journal points out today, you get paid upon delivery and worst-case scenario would begin to avoid cash flow if they were delayed. >> yeah. look, the central bull thesis for boeing shares is about the large amount of cash the company will generate over three or four rates and with the 787 ramping up to very high levels to meet customer demand. if we were to call in to question that cash flow, that weighs against the bull thesis. we don't have any data to suggest that will happen. the planes are still flying and i would say these sorts of teething problems are normal for new planes. we have them on the a-380 and we have to wait and see and we need more data and not calling in to question the long-term fundamentals.
